Appendix A

Summary

Appendix A in “The Internet” introduced me to new information that I previously was unaware of, despite taking many other classes involving the history of the internet and networking at LCCC, including Networking & Communications and Operating Systems. I was previously under the impression that the internet was implemented into the world in the 70’s-80’s, and I was surprised to find out that it really began to come to fruition in the 1960’s. The internet has been around for quite a while now and over time, we have become incredibly advanced in every aspect, from the evolution of DNS software to the way webpages are designed.

The basics of the way webpages once were designed back in the day compared to how they are implemented now is incredible. Appendix A highlighted the evolution of webpages and informed the reader of the beginning of “Mosaic” which was the first widely available web browser. I have been using a computer since about the year 2000 when I was around three years old and even back then, things were much different! Computers and the internet are a huge part of my life & quite a passion of mine and I am highly interested in the history of where all of it began, and I believe I will thoroughly enjoy this class. Appendix A was a great introduction to all things computers and technology.

In Appendix A, I also learned a bit about hypertext. The man who created the computer mouse also created the first hypertext system on one of the largest computers in the 1960’s. I also learned a small bit about the basics of HTML which I am excited to start learning about, as it is the backbone of the World Wide Web. I am interested in one day possibly working in front-end web development so HTML and CSS are very interesting to me.

All in all, Appendix A is jam-packed with a plethora of information regarding the history of the internet, the names of those who helped create it, and the basics of how we connect computers through certain types of cables (coaxial, fiber-optic, etc.). Appendix A also highlighted domain name services, internet service providers, and much more. Programmers, scientists and researchers have truly made the internet so easy to navigate and more accessible to everyone around the world.
