Chapter 4
Summary
Module 4 of “The Internet” describes all things about finding information on the web, gives instructions on finding news, employment and medical information on the web, and highlights the importance of seeking out the most recent information you can find on the web when doing any type of research. I use the internet for a multitude of things such as apartment hunting, reading the news and weather, and I also have found multiple employment opportunities on the web. Using symptom checkers for medical advice was also highlighted, and the author noted the importance of being sure to not immediately diagnose a medical problem on the internet. I have fallen victim to this many times, and I am sure many of my peers have also done this.
This chapter also described the multiple ways you can filter search results to personalize your queries by using sorting search features. The author describes the filtering by date feature on Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. and how it is used to find the most recent information listed. I use the filtering feature all of the time when reading reviews and buying products online to filter the lowest and highest ratings. Plagiarism and copyrights are also noted in this chapter. The author describes intellectual property and copyright laws, and gives tutorials on periodical databases and online libraries.
An important topic I relate to in this chapter is finding products and services on the web. E-commerce is one of the greatest aspects of the internet. As I have grown older, I have utilized online shopping much more than in person shopping. I use Amazon Prime quite frequently and one thing I love about it is the convenience. I also buy clothes online, electronics, and sometimes even household items.
