Chapter 7

Summary

Module 7 of “The Internet” describes wireless networks and goes into detail on how networking in the world began. The chapter highlights the fact that the concept of networking goes all the way back to first gen (1G) wireless networks – where a voice-only network began and operated on an analog cellular network. The author explains how 2.5G and 3G networks began to be developed, as well as the newest networking technology, 5G networking.

The chapter goes into detail on LANs, Wi-Fi, and mesh networks. Personal area networking is also discussed such as Bluetooth. Bluetooth devices use radio waves to create short-range connections between smartphones and other devices. Wide area networks are described as well, and how they are used to access the internet where Wi-Fi isn’t available. I use Bluetooth devices on a daily basis with my AirPods, my car’s Bluetooth auxiliary cord I use to listen to music, wireless speakers, and gaming controllers.

IoT (Internet of Things) is also highlighted in this chapter as well as security for wireless networks. IoT devices include smart watches and smartphones, ring doorbell cameras, and digital thermostats. I also have multiple IoT devices such as my smart watch and security camera in my home. Security concerns are also highlighted in this chapter and the author describes ways to secure an at home wireless network by protecting unauthorized access – such as using a Wi-Fi passphrase and changing the default router login.
