Chapter 3
Summary
Module 3 of “The Internet” went into great detail about the topic of searching the web. The author describes effective web searching techniques, as well as search engine features such as links, search engine databases, and searching using logical operators like AND, OR, and NOT. These operators are used during web searching to refine and improve search results. I personally have never used logical operators during web searching, as I really only learned about these operators in my SQL class. I do think that they can come in handy in any future researching.
The chapter also highlights web page qualifications and how to evaluate accuracy when visiting pages on the internet. It is important to remember to double check your sources and to be sure that sources you are getting information from are not biased. The author also points out that the quality of a web page is important when doing any type of research. A good quality web page will have an author listed, content related to the initial search and will not have many flashy colors or an overall poor design.
An important topic that Module 3 spoke about is the pros and cons of using Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a useful starting point for web research, but it cannot always be trusted as a reliable source for information because anyone in the world can edit Wikipedia pages. My teachers in high school always warned us and never really allowed any use of Wikipedia when citing sources during research. I personally use Wikipedia all of the time when I am just searching up information, although I am aware of its potential disadvantages such as lack of accurate information.
